Below are a few questions to help you understand what kind of moment this man is experiencing--a moment that I hope you will be able to relate to easily.
(Thank you to the curator, Carol Eastman, for permission to photograph this painting!)
(*Remember, in answering each of the questions, be sure to ask yourself the follow-up question, "How do I know that?")
What kinds of objects are in this room?
Antiques? Grimy relics?
Immersion: Do you "hear" anything? Do you detect any "smells" in the air?

What kind of man is this?
A servant? A soldier? A fop? Does he "fit" in this room?
What is he doing with the gun?
Cleaning? Fixing? Rearranging? Admiring?
Clue: How is he holding the gun? What is he looking at?

What is his reaction to looking at this gun?
Curiosity? Scrutiny? Adoration?
Immersion: Take his pose while holding an object like he does.
Immersion: What could he be thinking to himself?
I'll post my "reading" of this painting soon!
Happy Holidays!
