Before yesterday I would not have thought of Matt Groening (the creator of The Simpsons) and Victor Hugo (the creator of Les Misérables) as belonging to the same spiritual universe. The former pokes fun at the foibles of the world, the latter focuses on the grandeur of the human spirit. But it makes me so happy to see that the creator of The Simpsons cherishes the sanctity of free speech so much that he borrows from Hugo's noble spirit to pay tribute to Charlie Hebdo and free speech. In this cause, they are spiritual brothers.
