What does romantic love look like through the years of a relationship? In this course we'll experience artworks that cover the range of romantic experiences from first flirtations to intimacy between life-long partners.
During each weekly session we'll look a variety paintings from a particular stage of romance, and we'll focus on a couple of particularly powerful artworks. As we immerse ourselves in the stories, we'll also make connections from the artworks to literature and music. (Remembering your Romeo and Juliet, Princess Bride, and La Traviata might come in handy! We will, of course, personally connect to the story-moments to make them all the more meaningful. And we will bond with the artists, themselves, as we learn the secrets of their romantic lives that led them to create their visions. Featured artists will include Vermeer, Rembrandt, Gustave Klimt, Caspar David Friedrich, and many more. You might recognize a couple of the artworks we spend time with, but almost all of them are ones I've never featured in presentations or books. They almost all come from my recent European art adventure. Part I (8/8/23) - Flirtation and Foreplay Remember the first glances, the first whispers, the fear of rejection, the first kiss? We'll see what several artists choose to remember in those early days. Part II (8/15/23) - Consummation and Commitment What does it look like when you both know and decide to be with each other, whether it's sexually or matrimonially? This will be fun session! Part III (8/22/23) - Life Together What happens to romance and intimacy as the years go by, and you have become an ingrained part of each other's lives? What form does it take? Part IV (8/29/23) - Loss and Ecstasy In the final session we will experience the power of romantic love, both in its tragedy and its joy. This session will feature art with poignant musical connections. To Register Choose either "individual" or "couple" registration, and make a payment below.
