Course Description
This seven-session course will feature six artists and their responses—through their art—to social upheaval. In this course, we’ll see how Norman Rockwell reacted to WWII, how Jan Vermeer contemplated religious turbulence in his culture, how Francisco Goya saw his country being invaded, and many other artists’ reactions to both the social and personal aspects of the turbulence they experienced around them. Through their art, we’ll have the opportunity to understand how these artists can bring clarity and meaning to our own life experiences. With each artist, we will first immerse ourselves into the world of their art and personally connect to the stories they depict. Then, we will look at the artists' own lives to see what was happening which led them to create the artwork they did.
Artist to be featured include:
Norman Rockwell
Francisco Goya
Caspar David Friedrich
Jan Vermeer
Rembrandt
and one more TBD
